History

The girl costume is part of the Volendam traditional costume, the most famous traditional costume in the Netherlands. The traditional costume ownes its fame to the many international painters who frequently visited the village around 1900, the came for the appearance of the harbor in combination with the fishermen and their costumes. The paintings they made have ensured that the ‘Dutch costume’ has become known all over the world.

About the girl costume

The Volendam girl costume has two diffentent variants: the Sunday dress and the weekday dress.

The Sunday dress consists of:

  • kletje (black blouse)
  • colored underskirt
  • boezel (black apron)
  • hul (lace cap)

The traditional dress worn on weekdays does not look very different from the Sunday dress. The daytime costume was worn with a white and blue striped apron, this is called ‘bontje’. In contrast to the daily dress, the Sunday costume has a ‘boezel’ this is a black apron with a floral top piece. This is also worn over the underskirt, just like the daywear. The Sunday dress is the dress that you will receive, the ‘bontje'(white and blue striped apron) can be ordered as an accessory.
