History

The male costume is part of the Volendam traditional costume, the most famous traditional costume in the Netherlands. The traditional costume ownes its fame to the many international painters who frequently visited the village around 1900, the came for the appearance of the harbor in combination with the fishermen and their costumes. The paintings they made have ensured that the ‘Dutch costume’ has become known all over the world.

About the handmade male costume

The traditional Volendam male costume has 2 types of jackets, also called ‘blempie’. The handmade male costume has a black ‘blempie’. The male costume from the factory has a red jacket with black pinstripe, also called ‘polkabaai’, The differents between the two lies not only in the type of jacket but also in the material used. The handmade costume are made off cotton en the factory costume are made off polyester.

• handkerchief with clog
